For a smoother ride, try a bigger ship, they have less movement. The closer your cabin is to the center of the ship, front to back axis and top to botom has the smother ride. In other words, don't pick higher decks, get one in the middle, deck 6 on a 12-deck ship. That way the floor may slant forward and backward, but it doesn't actually move up and down or forward and backward.
Fresh air helps too, so get a balcony. Seeing the horizon also helps, so leave the curtains open during the day when you're in your cabin, and sit where you can see the horizon when on deck.
Try drinking ginger ale and bitters. It works.
Try to stay away from foods with a strong odor, as well as the greasy foods. Items such as egg salad and tuna salad can make a queasy stomach rebel.
Take Bonine (meclizine hydrochloride) 24 hours before going onboard the ship
