Adventure Travel Is Booming

An astounding annual growth rate for adventure travel shows that this type of travel is fast moving into the mainstream. It’s a development that presents travel agents with huge opportunities, according to Shannon Stowell, president of the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA).

According to the 2013 Adventure Tourism Market Survey, the average yearly increase in adventure travel was 65% from 2009 to 2012. The survey covered three key outbound regions: North America, South America and Europe.

The study also estimated the value of the global outbound adventure travel market at $263 billion – excluding airfare – up from $89 billion in 2009. Average spending by adventure travelers globally increased from $593 per trip in 2009 to $947 in 2012.

Useing YouTube to get More Clients

Sales expert Mike Marchev offered simple tips to attendees at last week’s ASTA Global Convention in Miami.

He implored agents to explore the world of online video – and have fun while doing it. And don’t worry about making it slick – in fact you want to avoid that, Marchev said

Here’s a roundup of his key points.

Use images with voiceover
“You can take your photos and speak into the microphone off camera, using voiceovers to describe what is going on in the pictures. Use music and pictures your clients like. You can even use Powerpoint and save it as a movie. Then make a voiceover.”

Don’t overproduce
“From a consumer perspective, [video makers] can go overboard and then it looks fake. Don’t think you have to become a polished actor. The more goofs you make the better you are, because people are attracted to goofballs.”

Keep it simple
“A talking head is you at your desk talking to a camera. You may be camera shy but it’s not something you have to prepare for – just say what you have to say. Give out tips because that is what viewers want to know.”

Be real
“I’ve seen a lot of cruise videos, and you only have to see one of those things before they all look the same. You don’t want that; you want your personality in there. Give me something real.”

Use free software
“Use Windows Movie Maker – it’s free and you can download it. On Mac, you can use iMovie for free. I use Camtasia, which cost me a couple of bucks, but I like it because it’s easy to manipulate.”

Customize for individual clients
“If you have a particular client doing something, you can put together a quick video for their trip. Their video will say whatever you need them to know, targeted for their family. They don’t even need to go to YouTube; make a page on your website for their particular vacation, and then you embed the video on their page.”

Keep it short
“The first thing you do when you see a video is check how long it is. I may not watch a 30-minute video, but a two-minute video I can find time for. Get your information in and get out of there; leave a follow-up phone number and move on to the next video.”

Let loose
“One of the biggest mistakes people make in this industry is that people keep their true personality hidden. You are who you are! Life’s too short, let’s have some fun. Use a cartoon. Use what people are going to pay attention to.”

How to Sell More River Cruises

Debbie Muir, manager of Inverness, Fla.-based Tally Ho Vacations, increased her river cruise business by 30% in the past year – even though her clients are primarily seniors who like to take advantage of last-minute ocean cruise deals.


• Hold frequent seminars at club houses or country clubs and always include a river cruise representative.

• Schedule individual appointments between clients and cruise reps. Remember, river cruising is more complicated than ocean cruising, so the one-on-one is important.

• Send out regular newsletters and e-blasts with the latest river cruise specials.

• Make sure you spend at least an hour with clients when booking a river cruise. “It’s not an inexpensive product. You have to go over everything carefully. I follow up by sending DVDs and other materials to make sure they understand what they’re getting,” said Muir.

• Know the key differences between lines. This applies to more than ships and itineraries. Transfer policies are among the important distinctions.

• Know which ocean cruise lines your clients favor, as this will provide the best gauge for determining which river cruise line they’ll like.

• If clients balk at river cruise per diems, remind them that all-inclusive pricing means they won’t pay for shore excursions, wi-fi, alcohol or soft drinks. That can even out their bottom line costs.

• Explain that the smaller size of river cruise ships is more conducive to camaraderie. “I can’t tell you how often my clients make good friends on river cruise vessels. They come back and want to book another cruise with the couples they’ve just met,” Muir said.

10 tips for attracting the RIGHT kind of client

1. Commit to marketing for the long term – as a travel entrepreneur, 50% of your time should be spent marketing and the other 50% should be spent working with clients. Many people are surprised by how much time I recommend you market. But when you don’t place such a huge emphasis on marketing, you end up executing a “shot-gun” marketing approach.

2. Establish yourself as an expert – my clients who are brave enough to pick a specialty and stick with it get the greatest and fastest results in upgrading their clients. Decide today that you are an expert and claim your expert status by giving good information, for FREE, as often as possible.

3. Farm – if you don’t want to pick a specialty, the next best thing you can do is to steal a well working tactic from realtors. The marketing approach that works best for them: Farming. In other words, select a geographically small, carefully selected target market and become the dominant player. And theres a really good thing about this strategy – very few people in the travel business are doing this – so you won’t have nearly as much competition as the realtors do.

4. Share Your Story – If you want trust, one of the best ways to start establishing trust is by opening up with your prospects first. Be willing to share your story. Get vulnerable. Go deep. Maybe you have survived cancer and planning travel helped you heal. Or perhaps you went through a humiliating divorce but eventually came out on top because you started your own travel business and found your independence. Share this with people. It is one of the most magnetic things you can do.

5. Create a marketing plan and stick to it – get your calendar out and commit to certain marketing activities on a daily basis, weekly basis, monthly basis, quarterly basis and annual basis. Just get the calendar out and put items on it. This simple act can be so profound. Plan it out. For example, you could commit to the following:
  • Daily – Facebook posts
  • Weekly – send an Electronic Newsletter; Write 1 article and post to blog
  • Monthly – Record 1 or 2 videos and post on YouTube as well as blog; Speak at 1 networking event
  • Quarterly – Send a snail mail letter to your best clients
  • Annually – Host a local charity event
6. Send a weekly electronic newsletter – I feel like a broken record preaching this, but so many people are not doing it. When done correctly, the electronic newsletter, sent weekly is the most powerful marketing too you have.

7. Joint Venture – Approach another business owner who already has an established clientele of the same people you want to be in front of. This is an important distinction – you want to approach a business owner who already has an established clientele, not someone who is also struggling. Open the conversation by telling them you want to help them. Here are some ideas of types of businesses you can approach:
  • Realtors
  • Restaurant owners
  • Boutique clothing store owners
  • Wine store owners
  • Jewelers
  • Financial planners
Here are some ideas of how you can work with them:
  • Offer to provide an article for their newsletter on a monthly basis
  • Plan a joint function – i.e. like a wine tasting, and you can talk about traveling to the region from where the wine originates
  • Co-host a webinar with them
  • Offer a coupon they can give away with their sales
8. Send a warm letter on a quarterly basis – Your existing clients are the best place to start to get more business. Very rarely do people use snail mail anymore. Use this to your advantage and put a personal touch on it. Write a heart-felt letter to your clients, updating them on where you are in your business. Then ask them to help you grow your business through referrals. Hand address the envelopes to ensure it gets opened.

9. Pick up the phone and call people – You are in a relationship business and part of that means connecting with your clients even when they don’t need your services. Create a system where you commit to calling 5 clients a week. Your intent for the phone call should be to 1) ask them how they are doing; 2) double check that you have contact details correct and 3) plant the seed of a vacation idea … for example, you could say something like “John, I see you and Mary have an anniversary coming up in November. Have you ever considered surprising Mary with an anniversary trip to Italy? I would be happy to take care of everything…”

10. Volunteer – This is another way to nourish relationships. Get known in your community for something, whether it’s a charity event or being on the board of directors of the public library. Get out there and get known.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
Go through this list and do as many as possible. Commit to these items. Make time in your day to get to it all because you will see results. Stick with it!

River Cruising Grows in Europe to Record-Breaking Levels


River cruising is a top niche market for home based travel agents and their baby boomer clients.


From the Danube to the Douro, cruise lines are expanding river cruising in Europe at a record-breaking pace.

At least 20 vessels will debut there in 2014. Here’s a roundup of the latest developments.

• Viking River Cruises earned a place in the Guinness Record Book by christening 10 new Longships on a single day in 2013. In 2014, it will introduce 14 more. That’s a 30-ship growth spurt since 2012 in continental Europe alone.

• Avalon Waterways introduced two of its Panorama Class Suite Ships this year, with three scheduled for next year.

• AmaWaterways debuted two ships as well, with two more in the works for 2014.

• Uniworld Boutique River Cruises introduced one new vessel this year and another is scheduled for 2014.

• Australia-based Scenic Cruises launched a new Space Ship vessel this year, and will introduce a slightly smaller version in 2014.

• Tauck River Cruises is introducing two vessels in its new Inspiration Class in 2014.

New to North American market
Lines that marketed in Europe are also throwing their hat in the ring.

These include the Vienna-based A-ROSA as well as Lueftner Cruises. Both are well-known to industry insiders, but relatively new to the North American public.

A-ROSA is highlighting its all-inclusive features.

The venerable Lueftner was founded 30 years ago. Its Amadeus brand of vessels has been marketed through tour operators such as Abercrombie & Kent. It’s now venturing directly into the North American market.

Adding more options to the mix: Scenic Tours is introducing Emerald Waterways in 2014.

Launching with two new ships, it’s is designed to appeal to a younger, more price-conscious demographic than its upscale sister company.

CLIA Opens Registration for National Cruise Vacation Week

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has opened travel agent registration for 2013 National Cruise Vacation Week (NCVW) Oct. 20–27.

The week includes “The World’s Largest Cruise Sale,” which CLIA says is the most successful sales promotion in the cruise industry.

CLIA-member agents and agencies who participate can access special offers, packages and cruise deals. The promotion includes a dedicated website that includes a guide to planning, holding and promoting a successful NCVW sales event, whether it be a traditional, virtual or both.

CLIA also is planning an advertising, public relations and social media campaign. Participating agents can also get marketing and sales support from 26 CLIA-member cruise lines.

Last year more than 7,000 U.S. and Canadian agents and agencies registered to host live and online events.
    
The cruise line offers available during this period or throughout the month of October might include free upgrades, two-for-one pricing and onboard credits. Details and registration are available on the newly designed NCVW website.
