Wealthy Parents Spend 2 times More on Vacation with Kids
Affluent parents share a passion for travel and are passing it along to their children at an earlier age than ever before, according to the Third Annual American Express Platinum Luxury Survey. More than two thirds of affluent parents (68 percent) say they planned three vacations with their children in 2006 with a total expenditure of $10,067 more than double the average annual expenditure by affluent parents for vacations taken without children ($4,524).
The survey, which included 1,170 respondents with an average of two children and an average household income of $472,000, also revealed that children are being given a view of the world at an earlier age than their parents. According to respondents, 68 percent of children age 17 or under have traveled internationally, compared with parents, who, on average, said they made their first international trip at age 19. Thirty two percent (32 percent) of parents also report their children have traveled in first or business class.
Travel is a top passion among affluent parents and they want to share their passions with their children to ensure they are culturally aware and well rounded, said Simon Kahn, vice president of American Express Platinum and Centurion Product Management, American Express. For example, we are hearing increased interest [in] vacations that are focused on gaining knowledge, perspective and cultural exposure.
In fact, travel trailed only physical fitness as a top hobby or interest about which affluent parents were most passionate. When looking at spending patterns among all top passions cited by respondents, travel actually topped the list at an average of $13,304 per year.

Niche Cruise Adds Online Training Program
The Niche Cruise Marketing Alliance has introduced an online training program to allow home based travel agents to become Certified Niche Cruise Specialists in the comfort of their home office.
"Although we offer in-person training sessions throughout the United States several times a year, we realize is it not always convenient for agents to attend these sessions," said NCMA Executive Director Lawrence Dessler. "We felt that adding an online training component would allow us to reach a larger number of agents who would like to specialize in this lucrative and fast- growing segment of the cruise industry.
"To become a Certified Niche Cruise Specialist, agents need to create a Niche Cruise Academy account by going to www.nichecruise.com and clicking through on the online training icon. Once an agent has created an account, they can register and select the Certified Niche Cruise Specialist Course. After successful completion of the course and certification examination, the agent has become a Certified Niche Cruise Specialist.
With the designation, agents receive a diploma and a variety of benefits that entitle them to higher commission on selected NCMA cruises as well as a highlighted listing on the NCMA website. To remain a Certified Niche Cruise Specialist, agents must take and pass at least one Niche Cruise Academy online course every two years.
In the initial certification course, agents learn about each of the 13 NMCA cruise members. The course consists of an introductory chapter, a chapter on why agents should concentrate on niche cruises, chapters on each individual cruise line, an evaluation and conclusion chapter and a certification exam.
The 13 NCMA lines have banded together to educate home based travel agents on the value of concentrating on the sale of specialty cruise products. The alliance provides educational programs, seminar content and trade show exposure for its members and this industry segment.
In addition, its website, www.nichecruise.com, has been redesigned to allow consumers in the U.S. and Canada to locate certified Niche Cruise Specialist travel agents by zip code, postal code or city.
NCMA member lines include American Cruise Lines, Fred. Olsen Cruises, Galapagos Explorer II (Canodros), Imperial River Cruises, Louis Cruise Lines, Majestic America Line, Norwegian Coastal Voyage, Orion Expedition Cruises, Pandaw Cruises, Peter Deilmann Cruises, RiverBarge Excursion Lines, Star Clippers and Voyages of Discovery. All lines except Pandaw Cruises, which is the newest member of NCMA, are included in the online training program. Pandaw will be added shortly.
For more information, call 425-867-0399 or visit www.nichecruise.com.

Asia
Is Asia the new Europe? China was No. 1 on Lonely Planets annual list of hot destinations for the new year, and China also placed first for the country representing the best value for the dollar in a survey of members of the U.S. Tour Operators Association.
The U.S.T.O.A. picked Southeast Asia as the hottest up and coming area for packaged travel, with the No. 2 spot going to China, India and Croatia in a three way tie.
China and India are off the charts, agreed Sandi Hughes, vice president of AAA Travel, the automobile association's travel services division. She attributed the growth in travel to the region to a combination of business travel spurred by U.S. investment; immigrants and their families traveling back and forth; and pure leisure travel by Americans interested in culture, history and monuments.
The continued weakness of the dollar against the euro and the British pound may also be leading some American travelers "to look for alternate destinations," said Rick Garlick, director of strategic consulting for the Maritz Hospitality Research Group. "Places like Thailand and Singapore have gained a new appeal."The first nine months of 2006 showed air travel to Asia by U.S. citizens was up 7% over the same period in 2005, according to the U.S. Commerce Department's Office of Travel and Tourism Industries, compared to a 4% growth in travel to Europe.
The United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany remained among the top 10 overseas destinations for travel by U.S. residents in 2005, which was the most recent full year for which data was available from the Commerce Department. But travel to Japan, No. 7 on the top 10 list for 2005, was up 40% from 2004; travel to China, No. 10 on the list, was up 21%; travel to No. 12 Hong Kong was up 25%, and travel to No. 15 India was up 33%.
