Cruise Lines Levy Fuel Cost Supplements
Following a move that is spreading throughout the cruise industry, more lines announced new fuel supplements on Friday, including Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCCL) brands (Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises), Crystal Cruises, Windstar Cruises, Majestic America Line and Viking River Cruises.
RCCL will levy a fuel supplement of $5 per guest per day for sailings that depart on or after Feb. 1. "Unfortunately, as fuel prices have reached record highs, we are forced to take this extraordinary step to offset those costs." The supplement will not be charged on any bookings already paid in full. In addition, guests who were booked before Nov. 16, and who do not agree to pay the supplement, may cancel their reservation before Dec. 7 for a full refund and no cancellation charges.
The supplement will apply only to the first and second guests in each stateroom and will not exceed $70 per person, per sailing. RCCL will provide travel agents with an administrative fee of $12 per existing booking to help offset the costs associated with contacting guests with existing reservations and collecting payment of the supplement for each booking that sails on or after Feb. 1. Sister companies Windstar and Majestic America also announced fuel surcharges of $8.50 per person, per day.
The surcharge applies to all currently published sailings through March 2009 that have not been paid in full by Dec. 15. Majestic America said the surcharge applies to new bookings made after Dec. 15 and to existing bookings that are not paid in full by the same date.Crystal's fuel surcharge is $7 per guest per day for all 2008 reservations that are not paid in full by Jan. 1.
"Escalating fuel costs continue to affect virtually everyone, and the impact on Crystal Cruises' daily operations is no exception," said Crystal President Gregg Michel. 7 Keys to Surviving a PC Disaster
1. Recognize a very real danger.
If you’re like most users, your life is on your computer–photos, e-mails, music, tax returns, documents, and so much more. But did you know that, every year, 43% of computer users lose irreplaceable files? Or that 300,000 laptops are stolen annually?
The data loss statistics are staggering. The need to address the issue is made even more urgent by the dangers that lurk around every corner–whether it’s a hard drive crash, theft, power surge, natural disaster, or accidental deletion.
2. Back up your files...off-site.
How do you avoid the nightmare of losing irreplaceable files? It’s simple: Back them up.
But please note that if you back up on CDs, DVDs or an external hard drive that are stored on the same site as your computer, you’re not really protected.
Take the case of movie director, Francis Ford Coppola, who lost 15 years of writing and photos when thieves stole his computer and his external hard drive from his home office in October. Or the recent California wildfires that have destroyed computers and on-site backups in many homes.
3. Find a solution that backs up files automatically and continuously.
Backing up your files on CDs, DVDs, external hard drives or other portable storage devices is laborious and time-consuming. It may even be something you put off or forget to do. As a result, your backup may be sporadic, and only some of your files will be protected.
4. Don’t settle for a partial backup solution.
Don’t let any of your files go unprotected. You need to back up all your irreplaceable files–with unlimited backup–without spending a fortune every time your backup needs increase.
5. In the event you do lose files, make sure restoration is quick and easy.
Restoring files doesn’t have to be an ordeal that’s lengthy and confusing. After all, how inclined will you be to use a backup solution if retrieving files is painful?
6. Make sure your files are secure.
What’s the point of backing up your files if some hacker can gain access to your data? Fact is, if your data is somehow compromised, you really haven’t survived a PC disaster

Crystal Cruise No Rebating Policy
Crystal last week announced it will apply "stiff commission penalties" to any agent found to be offering consumers any kind of cash rebate, discount, payment in-kind or, in any other manner, a Crystal cruise fare below the published savings rate. Under the new policy, agencies may continue to offer value-added, non-cash amenities including shipboard credits, provided that the total value of the amenities does not exceed 8 percent of the cruise revenue -- the line's lowest published fare less applicable Crystal discounts. Adventure Council Creates New Agent Training Program
The Adventure Council, in partnership with the Adventures in Travel Expo, has created a training program full of tips and tools to help home based travel agents become adventure travel specialists.
The program promises to make participants "better equipped to service your existing clients and develop new clients interested in active and adventure travel." The educational sessions, which are online and interactive, are priced from $149.
The Adventure Travel Specialist Webinar will take place on the following dates: Part 1 on Nov. 6, 1-2 p.m. EST; Part 2 on Nov. 8, 1-2 p.m. EST; and Part 3 on Nov. 13, 1-2 p.m. EST. Agents must participate in all three parts of the webinar to become an Adventure Travel Specialist.
Topics to be covered include:
1. Current trends & demographics
2. key factors defining adventure traveler preferences
3. emerging destinations; risk planning
4. providers -- building profitable partnerships
5. marketing strategies and the use of technology
6. the increasingly important role of sustainable tourism practices.
A free three-hour workshop will be held at one of the Adventures in Travel (ATE) shows in 2008 held in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Graduates will receive an "Adventure Travel Specialist" designation to be used in their promotional literature, plus:
