Shore Excursions for Active Cruisers

CARNIVAL
Remember the improbable Jamaican bobsled teams of the winter Olympics? Carnival has just initiated a new excursion that gives passengers a chance to take a bobsled ride through a Jamaican tropical forest. The bobsled, at Mystic Mountain near Ocho Rios, winds 3,280 feet on steel rails, with riders contolling speed with a handbrake. Cost is $59. Also at Mystic Mountain are a chairlift ride above treetops and a zipline canopy adventure. The excursion is available on the 14 Carnival ships that sail the western Caribbean.

MSC CRUISES
Hog alert: On St. Maarten, MSC offers adult passengers a guided motorcycle tour that lasts about five hours and runs through the French side of the island. Participants can ride either a legendary Fat Boy bike or the classic Harley Heritage, but must have a current motorcycle license (available in most states) and credit card. Price is $395. The tour is available from South Florida on MSC Lirica and MSC Orchestra sailings.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN
Using a hand-held GPS, passengers taking the GPS Video Walking Tour of Key West can take in the city's most famous sites on a pre-set itinerary or program the device to roam wherever they want. The interactive unit also provides commentary on various venues. Price is $29.

On Mexican Riviera sailings, active passengers can take an Outdoor Adventure Experience out of Puerta Vallarta that includes a panga boat trip, mule ride, off-road-drive, rappelling through waterfalls and zipline adventure. Tour is limited to 14 people, starts at $114.

NORWEGIAN
Passengers taking NCL's guided rooftop walk in Stockholm are fitted with a helmet and safety harness as they stroll atop the Old Parliament Building and other venues. The price starts at $199 and is available on Norwegian Jade sailings.

Another unusual tour from the Norwegian Jade is a mountain bike expedition in Corfu, Greece. Only 20 people can participate. The tour takes them to such untouched regions of the island as the villages of Kato Korakiana and Saint Marcos. Price starts at $179.

PRINCESS
Passengers not afflicted with the fear of heights now can climb Sydney's famous Harbour Bridge all the way to the top, more than 400 feet above the water, on a ship-arranged tour. Participants must wear a jumpsuit, headset and harness, pass an alcohol breath test and negotiate 1,400-odd steps on catwalks and ladders. Price starts at $175.

On the opposite side of the planet, active passengers 16 and older may take a shot at land-sailing on the Caribbean island of Bonaire. With the trade winds behind them, participants steer the three-wheeled sandboats on the longest land-sailing track in the world. Price starts at $99.

HOLLAND AMERICA
The line's Signature Collection accommodates passengers who want to tour on their own, providing a car or van and English-speaking guide. Cost for a car half-day is $500-$600, for a full day $600-$700. Cars usually have two-passenger maximum. A van, which can take four to six passengers, costs $700-$900 half day, $900-$1,100 full day. Costs are per vehicle, not per person, so guests can split the cost.

CELEBRITY
An after-hours evening at Russia's famous Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, when the facility is closed to the public, is offered by Celebrity. Included is a private tour of its celebrated art works and a ballet performance. Cost is $299.

On stops in Belize in the Caribbean, Celebrity offers a Raiders of the Lost Mayan Cave excursion that takes passengers through a maze of subterranean chambers used for Mayan rituals. The trek involves crawling, rappelling and crossing a swinging rope bridge. Cost is $105.

COSTA
For the ecologically minded, Costa offers a tour from the port of Ilheus, Brazil, that visits CEPLAC, a research center devoted to the preservation of sloths and other creatures in the Atlantic forest. Guests also drive on the environmentally friendly Ilheus-Itacare Road, where nets have been installed in treetops above the roadway so that small animals can cross in safety. Cost is $59. Three Costa ships call at Ilheus from December to March.

On a more exotic level, Costa passengers can swim and interact with rare giant sea turtles in the Indian Ocean during Costa Europa port calls in Mauritius, Comoro Islands and Mayotte. Price is 71 euros (about $105).

Bonus Commissions fromViking River Cruises

Viking River Cruises is offering bonus commissions of up to $250 per stateroom on select 2009 itineraries booked through Dec. 31. Viking River, which offers river cruises and cruise-tours through Europe, Russia and China, will pay $250 for itineraries of 10 or more days and $150 for eight-day itineraries. And on the easy-to-sell special 2-for-1 spring cruises, agents will earn $50 per stateroom. “This is a terrific time to sell prepaid vacation packages to Americans,” said Michele Saegesser, vice president-North America and South Pacific sales. “Although the U.S. dollar has gained a little bit against European currencies, it is still a savings to spend dollars instead of local currency on a vacation abroad.”

Home based travel agents can download the bonus commission flyer, with spring sailing dates listed and the bonus coupon in PDF form, at www.vikingrivers.com/offers/agent/VRCAgentBonus2009Coupon.pdf. They must submit one coupon per bonus, but they can print and submit as many as they like by mail or fax.

The booking must be made by Dec. 31 and the coupon must be received at least six weeks prior to the clients’ departure. There is no limit to the bonus commissions a travel agent can earn during this time period. Viking is offering 2-for-1 pricing on select March departures of the eight-day “Portraits of Southern France” or “Paris and the Heart of Normandy,” the 10-day “Tulips and Windmills” through the Netherlands and Belgium, and the 15-day “Treasures of the Rhine” from Basel to Antwerp.

These offers are only valid through Oct. 31 and must be paid in full at time of booking to receive the 2-for-1 pricing. All prices listed on the flyer reflect cruise discounts of up to $2,500 per couple, depending on itinerary and stateroom category.

The offers may only be combined with Past Guest and Refer-A-Friend travel credits. “We want to make sure travel agents are as eager to sell these terrific river cruises as we are,” said Saegesser, “so we are supporting home based travel agents’ sales efforts with attractive pricing, and sweetening the deal with a little extra incentive over our usual generous commissions.” For more information, call 877-668-4546 or visit www.vikingrivercruises.com.

New Honeymoon Registry

Happy Vacations has launched a Honeymoon Registry website designed specifically for Home Based Travel Agents.

The site provides a unique service that meets the needs of a growing segment of the population -- couples seeking non-traditional wedding gifts of travel, honeymoon packages and related activities.

Happy Vacations is the first travel wholesaler to offer a honeymoon registry, providing a unique and powerful sales tool for home based travel travel agents, extending honeymoon services to wedding couples.

With the Happy Honeymoon Registry, home based travel agents not only offer expertise on honeymoon travel, but can then help couples fund their honeymoon experience as well. Couples using Happy Honeymoon Registry service book their honeymoon with their travel agent and then register the items and romantic activities of their honeymoon as wedding gifts. Wedding guests then select and purchase from an array of items, for example, a day of snorkeling, a sunset dinner cruise, kayaking, couples massage, hot-air ballooning and airfare contributions.

According to Condé Nast Bridal Media, 10 percent of U.S. brides now register for honeymoons. This has created a perfect market for experiential wedding gifts and the gift of travel. “It only made sense to offer a honeymoon registry to provide both travel agents and their clients with a unique option,” said Nancy Williams, director of Happy Honeymoon Registry. “Many couples don't need or want the traditional wedding gifts of china or toasters. We help make their wedding memorable with a very special gift -- their honeymoon. And travel agents reap the benefit, because couples using our honeymoon registry spend more on their honeymoon packages resulting in larger commissions for the home based travel agent.”

Wedding parties average 166 guests, giving home based travel agents the additional opportunity to market their travel services to the friends and family of the bride and groom. Many travel agents create and print registry announcement cards for their clients, including their travel agency contact information. For more information, visit http://www.happyhoneymoonregistry.com/.

THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS

When you need an auto mechanic or an air conditioning repairman, where do you turn for help? Sure, some people turn to the yellow pages. But most will turn to friends and family and ask if they know of anyone who can do the work.

The best place for your business to be positioned is to be the business on the tips of the tongues of the people asked to make the referral.

THE 300 RULE
Preachers, funeral directors and people in a few other professions have learned "the 300 rule" through their own personal experience."The 300 rule" states that the average person knows 300 people on a friendly level. Wedding planners tend to make reservations for 300 guests. Funeral directors tend to need to make room for 300 mourners. You get the idea.

DOODLING WITH CIRCLES OF INFLUENCE
Imagine your circle of friends, family and acquaintances, a.k.a. your circle of influence. Now, draw your circle of influence as a circle on a blank piece of paper.

Next, contemplate the people in your parents` circle of influence. Some people who know your parents also know you. Therefore, you will share some influence with the people your folks know. Now draw your parents` circle of influence on your piece of paper.

Your circle and your parents` circle will intersect in one area, although the larger majority of the two circles will not intersect. If you are like most people, the two circles on your page at this point looks very similar to the MasterCard logo.

Now imagine drawing a page full of intersecting circles, each circle representing the circle of influence of the people who are within your own circle of influence. Imagine trying to encapsulate an accurate rendering of where your circle and the circle of your friends will actually intersect. Some circles will share a large area of space, while others will barely cover one another.

Actually, you can only imagine at this point what your piece of paper will look like. The actual layout of the circles imagined in this analogy is simply too overwhelming for the mind to comprehend.

THE BIG PICTURE
300 multiplied by 300 equals 90,000. By using the analogy of doodles in the previous section, the average person can actually network with up to 90,000 people! Even factoring in the overlap, one can still probably network with 50,000 people through their own circle of influence!

Simply amazing, isn`t it?

HERE IS THE SECRET TO YOUR SUCCESS...
There are 300 people on this planet whom you have a reasonable amount of influence. Take advantage of this fact. Make darn sure that every person within your own circle of influence KNOWS that you are in business for yourself, and make sure they understand what your business offers.

When your friend is asked to make a referral, they will recommend you.

PASSIVE VERSUS ACTIVE REFERRAL NETWORKING
When people ask your friends for a referral and your friend mentions your business, that is passive referral networking.

Active referral networking is when you can get your friends go directly to their friends and say "Hey, I have a friend who just started a business. If you are in need of what he offers or you know someone who will need his services, would you please give my friend a call or make the referral to his business?"

If you can get even a portion of the people in your own circle of influence to actively refer your business, then you have built the foundation to build an advertising campaign even more effective than the average local television advertising campaign.

Think about that for a moment.

Most people only dream of reaching 50,000 potential customers with their television advertising dollars. You now have the knowledge to reach 50,000 people without spending a single penny.

Free Markiting

Do you post to message boards, e-mail discussion lists, classified ads sites, FFA sites or newsgroups? This is a great way to get lots of FREE markiting, if done right.

If you have been to a destination or are knolageabul in an ANY subject you can post a message or just give your opion on a subject or ask aquestion about a subject. Then sighn it with your name and website address.

People will usually read the subject line before they read your message, so it's important they get noticed. Below are ten simple, but powerful tips to get your ads or messages noticed.

1. Use extra white space creatively in your subjectline. You can add extra blank spaces between your words or letters.

2. Combine capital letters with lower case letters. Use all capital letters in every other word or use acapital letter between every other lower case letter.

3. Add text symbols in your subject line. You coulduse them between words and letters. Start and end your subject with a text symbol. ( *, $, >,{,] )

4. Begin your subject line with the word "STOP!". People have been trained their whole life to stop what they are doing when they see that word.

5. Ask people a question in your subject line. We all went to school and were repetitively branded to answer questions.

6. Use the word "FREE" in your subject line. Your offer should be attractive to your target audience. It could be free information, brochures, etc.

7. Begin your subject line with an "online smile :)".People use smiles offline to gain people's attention and to win their trust, why not use them online too.

8. Don't use unbelievable claims in your subject line. People have or know some who has been ripped off and trained themselves to ignore those claims.

9. Don't use all capital letters in your subject line.It is hard to read, looks unprofessional, and on the internet it's considered a symbol for shouting.

10. Test different subject lines to see which ones draws the most traffic to your web site. Also, read the FAQ before posting a message or ad anywhere.

Celebrity Launches Second Phase of Five-Star Academy

Celebrity Cruises is introducing the second level of its Five-Star Academy for travel agents. Agents who have already completed the One-Star level that became available last month can now move on to the second phase of the multi-tiered program.

The program is launching in stages, each named with the number of stars earned by successfully completing it. The Two-Star level will cover detailed aspects of the Celebrity Cruises onboard experience, including dining, accommodations, Celebrity’s Star Treatment, nightlife/entertainment, activities and spa services.

Travel agents who complete the training and score over 80 percent on its tests will earn the designation of being a Celebrity Two-Star Agent. The third level, launching next month, will focus on specific ports of call. Levels four and five will follow, consisting of training on all the tools Celebrity offers travel agents in the areas of business development and selling Celebrity’s cruise vacations.

As travel agent partners successfully complete each of the first four levels, they can print a certificate noting their designation as a Celebrity One-Star, Two-Star, Three-Star or Four-Star Agent. Those travel agents who go on to complete the fifth level will be designated a Celebrity Five-Star Agent. Their travel agency will be featured in Celebrity’s online travel agent locator tool.

Five-Star Agents will receive vouchers that they can use to help to increase their business, including a Five-Star Agent logo for use in their marketing materials. Five-Star Agents will also be eligible to win cruises, co-op funds and training opportunities for themselves and/or their agency. More than 6,700 North American travel agents registered for Five-Star Academy when the first level was launched in September, and to date, over 1,500 have completed the first stage.

“Celebrity's Five-Star Academy is an exceptional training tool,” said Randy Norris, a manager with Frosch Travel. “It offers a thorough overview of the current deployment and service, along with future product enhancements.” For more information, visit www.cruisingpower.com.
