Holland America Line's HAL Academy offers an in-depth educational program designed to provide home based travel agents with the necessary tools and sales techniques to achieve greater sales success for any product, the program certifies those who pass as "Five-Star Agents," able to utilize this status and their new knowledge to become much more effective in selling cruises."

Today's travelers have more options for vacation than ever before and agents can provide great value to their clients by being educated about the products they sell. "They learn about our destinations and ships, how to master sales techniques both in person and on the phone, and how to identify, then target, the most valuable potential clients. They also learn how Holland America Line can support their sales efforts to create success."

Agents sign up for the complimentary program, study the six-chapter workbook at their own pace, and then take a test online. Graduates receive a graduation kit including more than $1,000 in bonus commission coupons, a personalized certificate and frame, 12 continuing education units per The Travel Institute or 12 CITC education credits for Canadian graduates, $25 discount off weekend and Alaska fams, use of Holland America's Five-Star Agent logo, a window decal and a white lapel pin.

Princess Cruises Adds Air to POLAR Online

Princess Cruises has added a feature to Polar Online that provides access to their clients' air details as soon as 60 days prior to the cruise departure. This enhancement enables agents to view schedules for Princess FlightChoice reservations, as well as add information for passengers with independent air.

"An air information feature was by far the most-requested POLAR Online enhancement by travel agents," said Jan Swartz, Princess' senior vice president of customer service and sales.Agents are now able to view their clients' cruise line air schedules on the POLAR "Passenger Confirmation" page approximately 60 days prior to the cruise departure date.

In addition, they can check any air customization fees paid, making it easier to break down air costs for clients. The display also includes the airline PNR record locator information so agents can arrange seat assignments for their clients with the air carrier. Additionally, travel agents will be able to note independent air schedules for passengers if they are using Princess transfers.

Agents can now use the Air Details feature to provide this required information rather than spending time to make a phone call. POLAR Online will also alert agents if their clients' flight arrival and departure times do not fall within the recommended schedule.

The POLAR Online tool can create a new booking in seven steps in as little as two minutes, and features more than 40 functions. Among the system's capabilities are the ability to search sailings by price, up-sell categories, build new groups, provide detailed commission reports and extend options. Vacation.com Travel Agent Conference

For those who attend the conference in the past, we always hear how great it is; that it’s one of the best in the industry; that there’s a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm; and that they learn so much by attending.

Lauraday is assuring me that members who attend seminars by Bob Abrams, Mike Marchev and Nolan Burris and our many supplier product presentations will come away with a bunch of new business building ideas they can implement right away. In fact...they want me to guarantee it, or we’ll refund your cost to attend (including air and hotel)! In addition, Lauraday tells me there are 16 new training courses and half a dozen new suppliers to better educate our members. So...look soon for the 'guarantee' that the conference is well worth your time...or we’ll cover your costs!

As you all know from coordinating functions, there’s a need to firm-up the numbers and for ‘minimums’ to be met in the area of hotel rooms and food/beverage in particular. So we need to nail down everyone’s registration no later than the 9th of May. If you haven’t registered yet, simply log onto www.AgentNet.com/conference click on 'Register Now' and follow the prompts from there.

In the last message I asked for feedback on ‘wave season’. As we know, the experience is different by member, but I think its fair to say that the Caribbean is somewhat weak in comparison to past years; Europe has been ‘hot’; Alaska still very strong...and business overall is spread out more over the course of the year... Have a great week...

Mediterranean, Europe and Luxury Cruising Market is Booming.

"The Mediterranean and Europe are the Caribbean of 10 years ago," said Carnival President and CEO Bob Dickinson. He also noted that home based travel agents continue to sell more cruises than ever and makeing lots of money doing so. "That is a trend that will continue for many many years to come," he said

"Overall, the trends continue to be terrific," said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Added Rick Sasso, president of MSC Cruises USA: "European cruising is not doing well, it's doing phenomenally well. Columbus came here in 1492 and now we're all going back to Europe." Sasso noted that cruising still only penetrates 1 percent of the European vacation market, but that more growth is expected as the traditional summer season is expanding, with some ships even operating in the Mediterranean year-round.

"The pent-up demand for luxury cruises is staggering." Silversea's new president, Amerigo Perasso, echoed Del Rio. He said 2006 was a record year for his four-ship line in net revenues, load factors and other areas. "2007 is expected to surpass 2006 in all areas," Perasso said. "We definitely see a lot of room for growth." The orders announced by Oceania and Silversea follow plans announced last year by Seabourn Cruise Line to build two 32,000-ton, 450-passenger ships for delivery in spring 2009 and 2010.

While Crystal Cruises hasn't announced any plans to build new ships, the line's executives have said in the past that a design committee is evaluating what a new luxury ship would include. "The growth trends are positive for the next 10 years," said Crystal President Gregg Michel, citing an increasing number of empty-nester households as the Baby Boomers mature. "The Boomers have already acquired the trappings of wealth and are looking for luxury experiences," he said. Michel added that 68 percent of Crystal's cruisers have moved up from premium and mass-market lines -- something for cruise-selling agents to keep in mind.

Seabourn President Pam Conover said the luxury clientele is a profitable one for travel agents to cultivate. "They are a desirable clientele, especially for travel agents, because they are used to paying for service but still expect value," she said.

10 Reasons to Purchase Travel Insurance

There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause your clients to cancel your trip, return home early or force them to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling.

To demonstrate the importance of purchasing travel insurance and emergency travel services here are 10 common examples of what could go wrong. This is a great list to keep in mind when communicating the benefits of Travel Guard insurance to your customers.

10 Reasons to Purchase Travel Insurance

1. It's 10 p.m. and you and your immediate family arrive at the airport for a connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled. Who can assist you with finding new flights to get everyone home?

2. Your bag was lost with your insulin inside. You need help to locate your bag as soon as possible and have your emergency prescription filled. Who do you call?

3. Your first visit to Europe, and your passport and wallet are stolen. Where do you turn for emergency cash, and how will you get your passport replaced?

4. You're involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and pay for a medical evacuation?

5. If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you must cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?

6.You arrive in Jamaica and your luggage doesn't. If it's lost, who will help you find it? If it's delayed, who will pay for your necessities? If it's stolen, who will pay to replace it?

7. Your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt. Who will pay for your non-refundable expenses? Who will help get you to your destination?

8. You're walking down a street in Rio and twist your ankle. Who can help you find an English-speaking physician?

9. Three weeks before your scheduled arrival, a terrorist incident occurs in the city to which you are planning to visit. Who will pay if you want to cancel your trip?

10. You are at a beach resort in North Carolina, and you are forced to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane. Who will help you evacuate and who will reimburse your lost vacation investment?

For any customer who thinks nothing will happen to affect his trip, these are great questions that deal with everyday possibilities. They can also help you discuss the many features and coverages (and limitations) that come with travel protection from AIG Travel Guard.

Promote & Sell Profitable Products

Promote & Sell Profitable Products
By Phil & Doris Davidoff, CTCs, CTIEs, MCCs

It is just common sense – promote and sell profitable products. Avoid selling a travel product that costs more to service and sell than the money your clients will pay for it. Sometimes you may have to do this because a good client or prospect requests a low-cost, low-profit travel product, but DO NOT waste precious promotional dollars promoting unprofitable products.
It is amazing how many agents are promoting the least expensive cruises and tours because “that’s what is in the newspapers,” or because they believe that a client who buys a cheap trip today will buy a more expensive one tomorrow. Believe us, this rarely happens. The client who buys a cheap trip today will probably buy another cheap one next year.

But, what is profitable and what is not? Only you know your costs (or, at least, you should). By promoting the most inclusive products such as cruises, all-inclusive resorts and escorted tours, you earn commission on the greatest percentage of your client’s travel budget and your profits will increase. Make sure your clients understand why the program you are recommending costs more than a barebones trip, and the great value of the included features.

Promoting the profitable does not mean that we should try to sell the most expensive trip, providing the highest commission to all of our clients. Luxury cruises, for example, require travelers who seek and are comfortable with a luxury lifestyle. You will not succeed if you are trying to sell Regent or Seabourn to a contemporary (mass-market) target audience.
A current controversy concerns the sale of short, three to five day, cruises. Should agents promote or sell them when it is difficult (perhaps impossible) to make a profit on a product only providing a $60 to $150 commission per couple.

There is one way to promote and sell short cruises profitably – through group sales. Even five or ten couples traveling together multiply your earnings. If you can add special functions to the cruise, you can increase your price to cover the cost of the special features and added profit.
With respect to individual sales of short cruises, take the order if you are sure that it is what your client wants – but don’t promote them.

Lemonade Stand Managment

Adam Aron, a former President of Norwegian Cruise Line, many years ago spoke to a group of travel agents in Anaheim, California. What he said then is as true today as it was when he said it.

In that speech, Adam conferred an honorary MBA from Harvard Business School to all participants who understand and follow the simple rules for running a lemonade stand that he learned while at Harvard:

1. Make good lemonade. Customers may buy bad lemonade once, but they will not return.
2. Don't spend too much making the lemonade. Service and quality are great, but not if they drive the cost of the lemonade so high that no one is willing to pay the premium (note: in an agency, our revenues for a transaction are frequently set by the supplier; if we spend too much making our "lemonade" we can't run a real business).
3. Find people who want to drink lemonade. This may sound trivial, but almost every business wastes a significant portion of their advertising money promoting their product to the wrong people. Small businesses are much better off putting a little bit of sweat into personally contacting highly targeted individuals than they are using money to reach a mass quantity of people and hope for a response.

4. Charge more than it costs to make the lemonade. Again, what we charge may be set by the supplier, but we always have the right to add to the commission being offered. If the commission isn't more than it costs to make our "lemonade," then we either have to charge extra (service charge) or get out of that particular business. If you lose 25 cents per transaction, you can't make it up in volume.

5. After the customer drinks, ask him if he would like a second cup. If he says "No," let him know the stand is open tomorrow from 9-5. So often, we help clients and then let them go. Do we follow up with a thank you note? Do we ask them what they want to do for their next trip?? Do we keep them on a mailing or emailing list to continue to ask them for future business??? If we don't, another lemonade stand will.

CLIA Expects Record Europe Season

The Cruise Lines International Association said its member lines are poised for a banner 2007 Europe cruise season. The strong outlook stems from the number of ships deployed in the region, the diversity and breadth of itineraries and ports, and the unprecedented number of passengers who recognize the value of European cruises.

CLIA cruise lines will serve as gateways to Europe's perennial favorite cities, including London, Florence and Rome, and this year are adding ports along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia, Italy's Puglia region, as well as the Greek Isles and the coast of Turkey.

Some cruise lines have extended the European sailing season to a full nine months, while others will have a presence in the region year-round. Many CLIA cruise lines also are adding more overnight port visits.

"CLIA-member travel agents are reporting that Europe cruises are in high demand, with some of their customers already reserving space for 2008," said Terry Dale, president and CEO of CLIA, the chief marketing organization for 21 cruise lines and 16,500 North American travel agencies. "

All indicators point to a record-breaking season. Travelers who haven't made their Europe cruise booking yet this year are well advised to take action immediately."

If you haven’t registered yet, simply log onto http://recp.rm05.net/ctt?kn=3&m=516269&r=MzcxNTkyMjkxNgS2&b=0&j=ODA3MjkxMTQS1&mt=1 then click on 'Vacation.com 9th Int’l Conference,' and follow the prompts from there.

From a content perspective is the main reason folks rave about our conference every year, we will have numerous training venues: (1) New Sales and Marketing Strategies with Bob Abrames, Nolan Burris, Mike Marchev and others; (2) More than 100 hours of classes about Vcom’s marketing programs and technology solutions; (3) Targeted educational tracks like Owner/Manager think-tank sessions and Independent Contractor sessions, and; (4) You can earn credits toward your certification with CLIA and continuing education credits with The Travel Institute.

As always, we’ll have our valued Trade Show with our Preferred Suppliers to help educate and focus on product lines available for sale throughout the world…plus the General Session; a Broadway production sponsored by Keith Prowse; an exciting show from one of Royal Caribbean’s ships, and a Las Vegas Revue! Good Stuff...sounds like an advertisement for the Vcom conference!!!!

I understand the constraints of setting aside time for the conference. Hopefully this opportunity falls under ‘training and education’ and you’re able to find some time, every year, to enhance your base of knowledge and join us. If you haven’t been to New Orleans since Katrina…it’s a must. A ‘must’ to help this treasured city; a ‘must’ to see for yourself the challenge they’re up against; and a ‘must’ to continually educate yourself on the ever changing product lines of our preferred suppliers.

I hope you all noticed that we’ve brought on a new preferred supplier in Pleasant Holidays! Pleasant offers customized packages throughout Hawaii, Mexico, Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. They’re offering our members 500 additional TRIP points for every new booking made in March and they’re rolling out product launch training sessions in cities around the country. If you need to find a BDM in your area, call (800) 442-3234, or you can e-mail them at: sales@pleasant.net or visit their website at www.pleasantagent.com.

Sell Groups

Sell Groups By: Phil & Doris Davidoff, CTCs, CTIEs, MCCs
A modern, well-managed leisure-oriented travel agency (including home based travel agents) focuses its efforts on cruises and tours. However, unless the agency or home-based agent is selling primarily deluxe cruises and tours ($5,000 to $10,000 or more per couple), a large volume of transactions is required to generate sufficient profits. With the cost of personnel, promotion and office operations constantly increasing while income per transaction on individual, mass market cruises and tours is not, it is difficult to make an adequate profit on ones and twos.

Selling groups both saves time and increases income. For example, selling 16 cabins to 16 couples requires 16 separate sales conversations with 16 individual couples. Selling 16 cabins to a church or social group usually requires only one or two sales conversations with the group leaders. Many of the individual participant bookings will be made with no conversations at all.
On most cruises, the cruise line will provide one free cabin if 15 are sold. This cabin can be used for the group leader, split among passengers to reduce cost, converted to agency profit or any combination of these choices.

Suppliers will often offer additional commission for group sales, especially in off-season periods.
We continue to be amazed at the number of travel agents who are not selling groups. They are working very hard, but they are not focusing on groups. If you are not, you should be. If you are selling groups, you are on the road to profits, and the more you focus on groups, the more you will realize greater profits and satisfaction.
