Holland America Alaska Group Sales e-Kit

The kit includes a number of selling tools designed to help maximize group sales on Holland America’s cruises and cruise tours in Alaska and the Yukon.

Among those materials are a 2009 Alaska and the Yukon brochure, a detailed map showing tour routes, a flier detailing the cruise tour modes of travel, a variety of postcards for agents to mail, sample group rates including group advantage program (GAP) amenities and a current hotel promotion offering a complimentary or reduced rate hotel stay in Vancouver or Seattle.

To cut down on paper waste and mailing costs, most sales materials have been transformed into email-ready sales tools. Agents may email materials including the main brochure, along with a separate map. For clients who prefer receiving mail, the postcards can be ordered and mailed.

In addition, travel agents can offer groups special pricing with substantial savings off the early savings fares. A group pricing flier in the e-kit details starting rates on select dates, GAP points earned and the tour conductor ratio.

Groups can also pre-book customized shore excursions and tours, arrange for private transfers and hold private parties and meetings. There is also a Culinary GAP program and a Family Reunion GAP package.

Economy Not Stoping Americans From Traveling

Travel Guard reports that despite economic uncertainties, segments of American consumers are still planning and booking travel -- in some cases for trips as far in advance as five months.

Travel Guard data suggests the "empty nester" and Baby Boomer segments of the population may be sacrificing other purchases, but are not willing to give up their "right to travel."

Travel Guard reports the average cost of trips covered through the company's plans in September and October of 2008 dipped only slightly compared with the same period in 2007 -- from $2,057 to $2,009.

While many media reports conclude that Americans are staying closer to home, this is not the case for Travel Guard clients. The number of clients traveling outside of the United States has dipped only slightly, from 79.5 percent in 2007 to 78.7 percent in 2008. For more information, visit www.travelguard.com.

Things that should be in every traveler's first-aid kit

Band-Aids & Neosporin
Bring a bunch of Band-Aid sizes on trips to treat everything from a blister to a banged-up knee, And Neosporin keeps cuts from getting infected.

Advil
The ibuprofen in Advil not only reduces pain and fevers, it also can relieve inflammation of the muscles and tendons after a long hike—Tylenol doesn't do that at all.

Pepcid Complete
The drug eases heartburn by combining a stomach-acid reducer with an antacid. But be careful mixing antacids and antibiotics—it can reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic.

Ultrathon Insect Repellent
Repellents with higher concentrations of deet protect longer against bugs. Find something with 30 percent deet or more. Ultrathon is a 34 percent deet lotion with a time-release formula that lasts up to 12 hours.

Dramamine
Dramamine helps prevent motion sickness when taken at least 30 minutes before traveling. It also makes people drowsy. So don't take it before flying if you know you'll have to drive when you get off the plane.

Imodium A-D
When diarrhea strikes, Imodium can stop the symptoms within 30 minutes, unlike Pepto-Bismol, which takes up to six hours to kick in.

Benadryl
In addition to alleviating hay fever symptoms, this drug can be used to treat hives and an itchy nose or throat caused by food allergies.

Neutrogena Sunscreen
Many Neutrogena sunscreens are made with a formula called Helioplex, which the company says helps stop UVA absorbers from degrading too quickly—making the sunblocks last longer.

Zithromax
This prescription antibiotic is the most effective diarrhea cure—especially in places like India and Thailand where bacteria are becoming more resistant to Cipro. For quick results, take four 250-milligram pills with Imodium.

Cortaid
Cortaid Maximum Strength anti-inflammatory cream contains 1 percent hydrocortisone, which is the highest concentration available without a prescription. The cream soothes rashes and bug bites.

Ways to make flying Less Stressfull

Bring warm things
More airlines are charging for blankets and pillows these days, and even when they don't, it's never totally clear how often those things get washed. And if you've ever seen a seatmate sound asleep and drooling ever-so-slightly onto that airplane pillow, you quickly recognize the downside of shared pillows. Bring your own without sacrificing too much space by packing a large scarf, pashmina, or wrap. That way, you can use your source of in-flight warmth as an accessory (or picnic blanket) once you land.

Don't forget about entertainment
Let's face it: Unless you're really good at sleeping on airplanes, boredom is likely to be a recurring problem on long flights. Nothing makes three hours feel like six more than staring at the seat in front of you while shifting uncomfortably and checking your watch every 15 minutes. Stave off boredom and turn flights into leisure time with books, magazines, or Sudoku. Bring a portable DVD player or laptop and watch movies. Or load up your mp3 player with podcasts or videocasts of your favorite radio and TV shows.

Exercise
Uncomfortable seats feel even worse when you sit still in them for hours on end. Give your muscles a break every hour or so with some basic stretches. Moving around also helps some people stay more relaxed on flights. Here's a list of exercises that you can do. Most of them are subtle enough that you won't even advertise yourself as that person who exercises in their seat.
Stay organized

Does this sound familiar?
You settle in, grab a book and some gum from your bag and stow it under the seat. Twenty minutes later you think of something else you want (your mp3 player or some tissue), but now the seat in front of you is reclined. A back-of-seat organizer, such as the Seat Pak from Flight 001, hangs from your tray table latch and keeps items you might want in flight within arms' reach.

Be prepared for a layover
Plan for any layovers by researching the airport ahead of time. Most U.S. airports have websites where you can find information about restaurants, lounges, and extra amenities such as showers, nail salons, or Wi-Fi hotspots. If there's a chance that bad weather may delay your connection, write down the phone numbers of airport hotels when you're researching–they could save you from sleeping on the airport floor.

Carry a water bottle
Don't want to be at the mercy of flight attendants who you suspect don't really care if you're thirsty? Achieve hydration independence: Bring an empty bottle through security and fill it up on the other side. If space is at a premium, look into water bottles that can be collapsed when not in use. If you're concerned about plastic, there are options such as Klean Kanteen steel or Sigg aluminum bottles.

Fight dehydration
Dehydration is a real issue in the air: It can increase the effects of jetlag upon arrival or just leave you feeling icky. The first rule of hydration is, of course, to drink enough water, which you can do whenever you want if you bring your own water bottle. But you can fend off stinging, dry eyes by also packing some moisturizing eye drops, and keep your skin supple with a little bottle of lotion. Both are allowed though security as long as the containers aren't larger than three ounces.

Pack your own food
Which would you rather eat: a soggy, $10 day-old turkey sandwich or a $5 packet of broken crackers? Trick question! Plan ahead and you won't have to settle for either. Pack your own lunch (just beware the TSA restrictions and leave the soup at home) or pick up something in the terminal before you board. If it's a long flight, also pack low-salt snacks such as fruit, so that when boredom and hunger set in, you'll be prepared.

Snag a good seat
If you're taller than 5'9", you know that whatever the airlines may claim, those seats were not built for you. If you're tall and even a little bit claustrophobic, sitting in an airline seat for any length of time can feel like a punishment. This is why it's not a bad idea to strive (and maybe even pay a bit extra for) a seat with more legroom. In coach, that means seeking out the exit row or bulkhead seats. You'll get more legroom and a little breathing space as well, which can make all the difference in a space as cramped as an airplane cabin. SmarterTravel.com sister site Seat Guru can help you find a roomier seat.

Wear noise-canceling headphones
The overpowering drone of airplane engines can interfere with sleep and make for a more stressful flight. Noise-canceling headphones replace the cabin and engine sounds with white noise or music. You can also plug them into seat jacks and make in-flight movie or television watching more pleasant. On the downside, they're pricier than most headphones ($100 and up), but they last for years and are a great way to drown out sounds—babies crying or people having loud political arguments, for example—in other situations as well.

Carnival Cruise Line Upgrades Travel Agent Booking Engine

Carnival Cruise Lines has upgraded the booking engine within its travel agent Internet portal, BookCCL.com, to include a host of new user-friendly features to help home based travel agents save valuable time during the on-line reservations process.

The enhancements include more streamlined and simplified processes for creating and managing bookings, along with a new interactive toolbar that allows for easier navigation between different components of the booking engine.

Other features include a new voyage information section that provides home based travel agents with a dynamic summary of the various options chosen for their clients, along with a new “upsell” tool that displays the cost for upgrading to a higher stateroom accommodation category.

In addition to a new look and feel, the upgraded booking engine offers convenient links to applications such as the FunPass pre-registration system, e-documents, and FunShipPay, an on-line payment option for travel agents.

The booking engine complements BookCCL.com’s more than 1,000 web pages of graphics, content and information on Carnival’s ships and itineraries, along with updates on the “Fun Ship” product and various company policies and procedures.

Recent additions to BookCCL.com include access to a series of webisodes with interviews with Carnival executives, along with links to such popular features as FunShipIsland.com and GoCCL.com, a technology-oriented blog aimed specifically at home based travel agents .

The site also features a “marketing resources” area with downloadable advertising slicks, radio promotion scripts, group sales forms, and other tools, as well as a Bon Voyage section where agents can purchase gifts to enhance their clients’ “Fun Ship” cruise experience.

For more information or reservations, call 800-327-9501 (individual) or 800-327-5782 (groups), or visit www.BookCCL.com.

NCL's New Groups 2.0

NCL’s Groups 2.0 provides homebased travel agents with the ability to hold up to 16 staterooms with no deposit required until four months prior to sailing; transfer individual bookings into groups up until the day prior sailing.

Agents can convert an existing group into new FIT pricing, should overall rates be lowered and get commissions up to two months faster than before via NCL’s Global Commission Payment program.

For group bookings requiring between 16 and 99 staterooms, travel partners have 60 days to hold space with no deposit. Then, a deposit of $25 per stateroom will be due. Travel partners who book more than 100 staterooms will work closely with NCL to negotiate a timeline that meets their needs.

NCL’s new Groups 2.0 allows our home based travel agents to elevate the marketability and selling capacity of NCL’s cruises.

Groups 2.0 will be applicable for new groups booked on or after Dec. 1, 2008 for 2009 and beyond sailings. For existing groups on 2009 and beyond sailings, NCL has built the ultimate flexibility allowing travel partners to choose whether they want to maintain existing group terms or to move to the new Groups 2.0 enhanced terms.

Travel partners can book groups online by visiting www.bookncl.com or call an NCL group specialist at 800-327-7030. For further information on NCL, call 866-234-0292 or visit www.ncl.com.

Preventing Cancellations Webinar

“The Art of Preventing Cancellations,” on Nov. 6. This exclusive Vacation.com presentation will provide members with proven steps to avoiding profit-draining cancellations -- an event that is occurring more frequently to travel agents across the country in response to a weakening economy.

“This webinar will provide our members with essential strategies to solidify reservations already on the books and to fully profit from their hard work.” During this free webinar, we will discuss the numerous actions agents can take to ensure their booked clients complete the transaction, such as overcoming buyer’s remorse, maintaining the relationship after the sale and instigating a three-step approach to protect current bookings.

All attendees will receive a “Think Fast!” flier to have ready at their desks to remind them of the advice when a cancellation call comes in, preparing them to rebut a wide range of common arguments.

While the webinar will comprehensively prepare agents, the reality is that some customers will still cancel. In response, we will address what an agent can do to preserve the relationship of a cancelled client and secure future business -- a tactic that is imperative for travel-sellers to learn since the success of any agency depends on client retention and referrals over the long haul.

“The Art of Preventing Cancellations” and other informational webinars, are produced by Vacation.com’s department of Training and Member Development to provide members training on Vacation.com’s wide array of exclusive programs and products, as well as the everyday challenges they experience in running their business. For more information, visit www.agentnet.com
