River Cruise Group Planner by Uniworld

Uniworld released its 2008 Europe and Russia group planner. Travel agents who book 2008 groups before June 2007 can secure 2007 cruise-only prices on all 2008 Europe and Russia programs.

Uniworld will offer over 20 different itineraries and more than 270 departures in Europe and Russia in 2008. "We have created the 2008 Group Planner in response to the increasing demand for group space on our Grand River Cruise programs," said Wesley Bosnic, vice president of national accounts and group sales at Uniworld. "Being able to offer our 2008 Europe and Russia cruises at 2007 prices provides the travel agent community with the tools they need to reach out to their best group customers and secure business for 2008.

"Uniworld has a dedicated Group Department that handles processing of all group-related services -- from cabin reservations to custom service and air requests -- as well as a dedicated group number at 800-425-0043. In addition, travel agents can earn commissions on published cruise and air rates, and pre- and post-cruise extensions. Uniworld also offers group discounts, tour conductor benefits, and special group amenities. For more information, agents can call 800-733-7820 or visit www.uniworld.com.

New Selling Tools from Marriott Hotels

Marriott International, Inc. launched a new, interactive, online format for its Hotel Excellence! Home based travel agent training program. This self-paced training program, was developed to maximize travel agents' success in selling hotels for individual travel.

Agents can access the redesigned online program by visiting www.marriott.com/travelagents or by visiting https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com. The new online training format comes with audio, photography, interactive exercises, printable "take-away" information, and a resource library with information and web links.

The training modules provide general information and questions and answers about selling lodging needs, as well as the benefits and diversity of Marriott International's 10 lodging brands. After agents complete the modules and perform related activities, they take five 10-question, multiple-choice tests on the interactive site. All of the module test results are provided instantly.

Along with the new training, additional enhancements are available on the "My HE! Home" page, where agents can review their past and current exam status, update their profile information, review their eligibility for Marriott's "Fam-Tastic" rate program and their agency's status under Marriott Preferred Travel Agency program, access a resource library (including Marriott's global contact information), and review past "Reserved for You" email newsletters sent to HE! graduates.

Marriott's HE! program currently has more than 113,000 graduates in 129 countries. Passing the program is the first step toward becoming a Preferred Travel Agency (PTA). Marriott's PTA program offers a preferred commission status and special benefits for participating travel agencies. In addition to passing HE!, the agency's owner or manager must sign an agreement to sell Marriott brands equally with those of other hotel companies. Once a PTA, an agency receives 10 percent commission on commissionable transient reservations and 12 percent commission on the sale of Marriott's Incentive Certificates.

A travel agent who achieves a score of at least 70 percent on each of the five modules is designated a hotel sales specialist certified by Marriott International. Benefits include a certificate of completion; exclusive access to "Fam-Tastic" rates, which start at $49; invitations to recognition functions at industry events; special contests via Marriott International's travel agency website; and 20 Continuing Education units toward maintaining Institute of Certified Travel Agents (ICTA), CTC or CTA status in the U.S. Current HE! graduates are not required to re-take the program. However they are encouraged to review the new, updated information and interactive features and encourage their colleagues to become graduates.

Current graduates choosing to complete the new online version will retain their original exam scores. Individual agent requirements and benefits will not change. Travel agents who are currently using the workbook to complete their HE! training and testing will be permitted to continue their current program through June 2007. The new HE! online program features are available in multiple languages. For more information, call 800-831-3100 or email hotel.excellence@marriott.com.

Carnivals Travel Agent Fam Program

Carnival Cruise Lines is expanding its home based travel agents familiarization program to include more ships and embarkation ports in 2007. The line hopes to surpass last year's record 23,000 travel agents who participated in the fams. The program encompasses ship inspections and luncheons aboard all of Carnival's 21 ships in 18 homeports.

"The ‘Fun Ship' vacation experience has undergone dramatic change in recent years, and our familiarization program has proven to be extremely valuable in providing travel agents with a comprehensive overview of our product," said Vicki Freed, Carnival's senior vice president of sales and marketing. "We've received excellent feedback on this program, which allows agents to see for themselves what ‘Today's Carnival' is all about, all in a very timely and efficient manner."

While most of the fams encompass a full day and include a tour of a ship while in port, many travel agents opt to overnight in a homeport city and visit up to five ships over the course of two or three days. During the fams, travel agents meet with shipboard personnel and visit the ships' public rooms and areas, spa facilities, and children's and teen facilities, including the new Club O2 teen clubs. Additionally, participants enjoy a multi-course luncheon, where they can sample the line's George Blanc Signature Selections menu items created by the world-renowned chef, and tour staterooms that feature the Carnival Comfort Bed sleep system.

Ship tours are typically hosted by Carnival's business development managers, who also conduct sales seminars offering a variety of proven selling and closing techniques. Agents also tour cruise terminal facilities to observe the embarkation process. Visits to area hotels and attractions, which are included in pre- and post-cruise land stays, are also available.

There is also an executive fam program affiliated with Miami- and Fort Lauderdale-based ships that includes a visit to Carnival's Miami headquarters. The program is designed for travel agency owners, managers and experienced cruise sellers who want to strengthen their understanding of the Carnival product and the company's shoreside operations.

Home based travel agents wishing to obtain additional information or participate in Carnival's travel agent familiarization program should call the business development services department at 800-327-7276. For more information on Carnival, visit www.carnival.com or www.bookccl.com

Survey Shows Top Picks for Packaged Travel

Water-oriented vacations such as cruise tours, river touring and visiting inland waterways, and niche travel are the top picks for packaged travel in 2007, according to an informal member survey conducted by the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA). Attesting to the popularity of river and waterway cruises, 33 percent of USTOA survey respondents reported a 40 percent increase in their river touring programs for 2006, compared with 2005, and 40 percent saw increases of 10 to 15 percent. As to how people will experience their travels, 27 percent of survey respondents said soft-adventure will be the way to go, followed closely by escorted touring (24 percent), and independent packages (20 percent).
When asked what type of special interest travel is hottest, culinary and wine tasting placed first, while outdoor experiences such as African safaris and luxury camping in the Australian Outback topped the soft adventure list.

"People today are looking for more than just sightseeing. They want to indulge their passions, whether it is food, wine, or the outdoors," said Bob Whitley, USTOA president. "They want adventure and they want to learn. However, they want comfort with their adventure. They want to go on safari or walking, but at the end of the day, they want to return to comfortable surroundings."

The survey results predicted that the escorted tour with a modern twist -- free time and flexibility -- will experience the highest growth, followed respectively by special interest and small group travel. Independent packages came in as the third most popular in both short and long-term growth projections. "A few years ago, we would have seen independent packages in first place," Whitley said. "However, as tours have become more creative and specialized, we are seeing growing interest in this area and a possible maturing of the independent package market."

The shift in touring preferences is largely driven by the baby boomer population, Whitley observed. "Their demands are shifting," he said. "Baby boomers want group travel that matches their specific needs and interests. They love the idea of soft adventure, and they want to travel in smaller groups. They also want more free time, flexibility and some independence."

Not surprisingly, baby boomers represent the single largest market for tours and packages. When asked for the average age of their travelers, 54 percent of USTOA respondents cited 50-65, while nearly 30 percent said 35-50. Surprisingly, less than 10 percent said their average traveler was over 65. This correlates with findings of a consumer survey conducted for USTOA in spring 2006, Whitley said. "That survey found that 70 percent of those aged 55-64 were more likely to buy a tour or vacation package based on savings, compared to 38 percent of the 65-plus age group," he said. "In fact, 40 percent of those over 65 said they were not at all likely to take a tour or package regardless of savings. This pretty much dispels the misconception that people who take tours and packages are mainly senior citizens."

Among other survey results: Couples account for the majority of packaged vacation travelers, according to 65 percent of operators polled, with families second (cited by nearly 30 percent). Some 67 percent of USTOA members said that travelers booked their vacations three to six months in advance, while 16 percent said travelers book more than six months ahead. Travel Trends

Family travel (adults with children) will continue to grow at a faster rate than all other forms of leisure travel, as both parents and grandparents continue to look at travel as one way in which to "reunite" families in a contemporary world that is increasingly dominated by the demands of work.

The concept of "inclusive pricing" (one price for a bundle of basic services) will grow in popularity beyond destination resorts to include commercial hotels seeking to provide road warriors with good value for "just the basics"

Interest in spa travel will continue to grow as more consumers seek ways to manage the mounting stress in their lives, thereby igniting the next generation of spa development in commercial hotels.

The cruise industry will continue to enjoy remarkable growth (precipitated by the arrival of exciting new ships, an aging population and general marketing prowess), thereby becoming an even more formidable competitor of destination (land-based) hotels and resorts. Between 2000 and 2o15 the cruise industry we have added over 100 NEW Cruise Ships.

Most importantly, barring the impact of any catastrophic political, economic, social or terrorist event in the months ahead, 2007 should be year for the industry's record books.

Religious Group Travel Packages

Globus, which launched a separate religious division to develop and operate religious vacations, has announced its religious programs for 2007.

In addition, catering to most denominations, including several itineraries focused on Catholic and Protestant/Christian faiths, Globus has increased the number of departures by 50 percent for 2007.

New religious vacations include:
"Christian England and the World of C.S. Lewis,"
"A Journey through the Bible: Egypt and Jordan,"
"The Grand Catholic Italy" vacation and a tour of Lourdes and the Shrines of France, all of which offer personal, in-depth visits to famous religious sites. In addition to these new vacation options, Globus reintroduced popular itineraries.

In 2006, Globus held regional Religious Travel Symposiums and Faith-Based Travel Showcases, providing education, presentations by pastors who run travel programs and sales strategies for travel agents interested in offering religious vacations to their clients. "The main purpose of the symposiums is to help home based travel agents successfully enter and succeed in this rapidly growing market," said Mike Schields, director of group sales and emerging markets for the Globus family of brands. "Interest in, and attendance at, our travel symposiums increased by 100 percent in 2005.

We're bringing more to home based travel agents in 2007 and are planning to host conferences in Denver, Seattle and Boston or Atlanta."Additionally, the Globus Faith website acts as a resource for agents selling faith-based travel, as well as travelers interested in learning more about the world's great religious sites.

Globus recently introduced a feature providing website visitors with the stories behind each religious site, giving them historical context for the offerings of each vacation.

Globus' 2007 religious programs include:
the 10-day "Footsteps of Apostle Paul to Greece and Turkey" tour from $1,569 per person, double, land only;
the 11-day "Journey Through the Bible to Egypt and Jordan" itinerary, from $1,699 land only; the nine-day "Christian England & the World of C.S. Lewis" program, from $1,929 land-only; the nine-day "Classic Shrines of Italy" tour, from $1,649 land only;

Carnival University Courses

Home Based Travel Agents who successfully complete Carnival Cruise Lines' new "Carnival University Online" training course are now eligible for credits toward their Accredited Cruise Counselor or Master Cruise Counselor accreditation from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Carnival University Online provides travel agents with a comprehensive overview of our company and the ‘Fun Ship' cruise experience, according to Bob Dickinson, president and CEO of Carnival. Travel agents who complete all seven modules within the course will receive five credits toward their CLIA cruise counselor accreditation.

Launched in May 2006, "Carnival University Online" is located within Carnival's travel agent Internet portal, bookccl.com, and comprised of seven distinct modules, each focusing on a different aspect of the "Fun Ship" vacation experience.

Course chapters include:
"Who Is Carnival Today," providing a comprehensive overview of the brand;
"Identifying Clients," offering detailed information on Carnival's demographics;
"Cruise Choices," covering accommodation types, on-board activities, and destination and shore excursion options;
"Sales Climate Today and Tomorrow," focusing on the evolution of the travel agency distribution system;
"Special Sales, Group and Cruising for Charity" chapter offers tips for developing group business;
"Booking/Marketing Support" provides an overview of Carnival's wide-ranging sales tools and resources.

Travel agents must answer a series of multiple-choice questions correctly before moving on to the next module. Chapters can be completed individually and the program does not have to be completed in one session. Upon completion of the course, travel agents will receive a certificate of completion in approximately three to four weeks. To earn points toward their CLIA certification, travel agents must submit their certificate of completion to CLIA, along with the appropriate CLIA documentation. Certain restrictions apply.

For more information on "Carnival University Online," contact the line's business development services department at 800-327-7276 or visit http://www.bookccl.com/.

Survey Finds Home Based Travel Agents Are Profitable

Today's North America home based travel agents earned profits last year and expect an even better year ahead in 2007. They sell more cruises than any other travel product, and more than half have their own websites. They attend travel agent shows, but they want even more training opportunities.

That's a snapshot of the findings in the 2006 year-end survey of home based travel agents in North America conducted by the Outside Sales Support Network (OSSN). Distributed by OSSN and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) , the survey attracted 1,826 respondents, making it the largest annual study of the home based travel agent market.

Here's a quick rundown of the survey results:
Home based agents have matured into a very established travel distribution channel. Two in five respondents (41.5 percent) have operated as home based travel sellers for at least five years, and more than half (52.6 percent) reported that selling travel is a full-time job.

Nearly half (45.9 percent) ended 2006 with sales of more than $100,000, and one in four (25.4 percent) broke through the quarter-million-dollar mark. Nearly a third (29.3 percent) said their sales increased by more than 20 percent last year over their 2005 totals.

In the end, more than seven in 10 home-based agents (76 percent) reported that they "enjoyed the travel industry more" in 2006 than the previous year. At-home agents focus on travel products and niches that generate higher earnings. Three out of four respondents (76.1 percent) have developed cruise sales as a niche for their businesses. Other popular sales areas include tours (31.6 percent), family travel (27.4 percent), senior travel (14.9 percent) and hotel reservations (13.0 percent).

Three in five agents (60.4 percent) said they earn more profits from selling cruises than from selling tours. At-home agents also are focused on growing their home based travel businesses: Nearly eight in 10 respondents (77.2 percent) have set new goals for 2007 and attended trade shows in 2006 to hone their skills (78.6 percent).

Home based travel agents have grown savvier in their sales and marketing efforts, but they want even more training and support from suppliers and host agencys. Three out of five surveyed agents (60 percent) now have their own websites. Four out of five surveyed agents (83 percent) believe that most travel suppliers have added resources and support programs to help home-based travel businesses succeed. However, 24 percent said they still need more training opportunities, and 54.4 percent identified other types of training and marketing support they wish to see from suppliers in 2007

Cunard Academy Launches Queen Victoria Course

Cunard Line has created a new online course on the Queen Victoria, which is scheduled to enter service in late 2007. All home based travel agents who complete the Cunard Academy course on the Queen Victoria by Jan. 8 will be entered to win a trip to Beverly Hills to attend a Hollywood awards show afterparty.

The training course features a detailed overview, a short quiz and moves agents one step closer to Commodore status and the chance to earn one of 250 Transatlantic or Caribbean voyages aboard Queen Mary 2. The course begins with an overview of Cunard's place in maritime history and highlights the ship's features, traditional Cunard offerings and accommodations.

The course allows agents to bookmark their progress and return to the course at their leisure. In Cunard Academy, agents hone their Cunard expertise throughout the four phases of the curriculum, which is a combination of required and elective classes.

As agents complete each level of the program-First Officer, Staff Captain, Captain and Commodore -- they are awarded a certificate of achievement and a pin indicating their achieved rank. Each year, the first 250 agents to reach the rank of Commodore will be invited to on a QM2 voyage. In addition, beginning with Staff Captain, the second level, agents receive the benefits of Silver, Gold and/or Platinum World Club membership. For more information, call 800-5CUNARD or visit www.cunard.com or www.onesourcecruises.com.
